Who we are
This website, cta-it.com, is run by Cascadia Technology Advisors LLC, an IT services firm in Sherwood, Oregon. "We" and "us" in this policy mean Cascadia Technology Advisors. If you have a question about your information, email kyle@cta-it.com and Kyle will answer personally.
Information you give us
Contact form
When you send the contact form, we receive your name, email address, company (if you give one), topic and message. It arrives as an email in our inbox and we use it to reply to you. Sending the form does not add you to any mailing list.
"Stay in touch" signup
If you sign up for occasional notes, we store your email address with our email provider so we can send them. Every note includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect right away.
Booking a call
Calls are booked through Calendly, which collects the details you enter there (such as your name and email) under Calendly's privacy policy.
Working with us
If we talk about working together, we may keep your contact details and notes from our conversations in our customer records system so we can follow up properly.
The security check-up
Our free security check-up is built to store as little as possible.
- Domain check. We look up the domain you enter using public information only: its DNS records, the public domain registry, and one ordinary visit to its homepage. We keep a record of the domain, the date, the grade, and whether a full report was requested. We don't record who ran the check.
- Full report by email. If you ask for the full report, we email it to you, add your address to our occasional notes (with an unsubscribe link in every one), and Kyle receives a short notice with the domain, its grade and your email address so he can follow up if you'd like help.
- Your connection. Details about your connection, such as your approximate location, internet provider and browser version, are shown only to you and are not stored.
- Office network check. This runs only when you tick the box and ask for it. It tries to connect to a short list of common services on the public IP address you're visiting from, to see whether any are open to the internet. Nothing is logged in to or changed, and the results are shown only to you and not stored.
Information collected automatically
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: which pages are visited, roughly where visitors are (to about the city), what kind of device and browser they use, and how they found us. Google Analytics uses cookies to do this. We use what we learn to improve the site.
Advertising measurement
We advertise on Google and Microsoft (Bing). Their tags on this site use cookies to tell us when someone who clicked an ad goes on to contact us or book a call, and they may let those companies show our ads to people who have visited this site before. Google and Microsoft may collect information about your activity on this site and other sites over time.
QR codes
Some of our printed materials have a QR code that saves our contact details to your phone. When one is scanned, we count the scan and where the code was printed (for example, a mailer or a sign), along with an approximate city and country. No cookies are involved.
Hosting and security
The site runs on Cloudflare, which processes your IP address and basic request details to deliver pages quickly and to protect the site from attacks. Requests that look malicious are blocked and logged for security.
Threat Watch
Our live threat map shows connections that our firewall and Cloudflare blocked. It shows the country, the type of attack and the service targeted. Before anything reaches this website, the IP addresses of attacking computers are replaced with an anonymous code that changes every day; the real addresses stay in our firewall's own logs and are never published. Normal visits to this site never appear on the map, only blocked attempts.
Who we share information with
We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it for anyone else's marketing. We use a small number of service providers to run the site and our business, and they handle information only to provide their service to us:
- Cloudflare: website hosting and security
- Google: analytics and advertising measurement
- Microsoft: advertising measurement, and our business email
- Resend: sending email and keeping our list of people who signed up for notes
- Calendly: booking calls
- HubSpot: our customer records
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.
Do Not Track and cookies
Some browsers can send a "Do Not Track" or "Global Privacy Control" signal. This site doesn't currently change what it does when it receives those signals. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, use a content or tracker blocker, or use Google's Analytics opt-out add-on. The site works normally without them.
As described above, Google and Microsoft may collect information about your browsing across different websites through their tags on this site.
How long we keep it
- Contact form messages and email: as long as needed to help you and keep track of our working relationship.
- Notes signups: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your address.
- Security check-up records (domain, date, grade): up to two years.
- Analytics: kept by Google according to our account's data retention setting.
Your choices
You can unsubscribe from our notes at any time using the link in any email. You can also email kyle@cta-it.com to ask what information we have about you, to correct it, or to have it deleted. We'll respond within 30 days, and we won't treat you any differently for asking.
We take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold, though no website or email system can be guaranteed completely secure.
This site isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update it here and change the effective date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll say what changed at the top of this page.
